Board games (such as Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, Hi Ho Cherry-O) teach many good skills. The skills of taking turns, counting spaces on the board, recognizing numerals, matching colors, and following simple directions are activities that will help with academic and social skills at school. Even simple card games can be fun and educational. Don't forget to try simple memory games, too! Place 6-12 matching cards upside down and take turns finding the matches. Start with a smaller number so that your child can be successful and then start making it more challenging by adding a few more pairs.
This is a good time of the year to teach your child to play some simple board games. We have to spend more time inside due to the cold and inclement weather so why not do something fun together!

Pronouns, pronouns, pronouns!!! Many of our kids use the incorrect subject pronoun in their conversational speech (Her my friend. Me want it. Him took my toy.). Spend some time really listening to how your child is talking. Model the correct version of the sentence. Even write the word or sentence down to let your child ‘see’ how he/she needs to say it correctly. Visual cues and prompts always ROCK!
Happy New Year! It's hard to believe that half of the school year is already over! Time to work hard and make good gains so we can finish out the school year strong!
As always, it is good to focus on building vocabulary, so point out everything that reminds us of winter. Cold weather, coats/hats/scarfs/mittens/gloves, sleds, snow, ice, icicles, etc. The more we talk about what we see around us, the more your child will be inquisitive and build on his/her overall cognitive and language skills. Let me know if you have any questions about how to build your child's speech and language skills. Your child will show the fastest, best growth when all of those around him/her work as a team! |
